It’s quite a rare opportunity to get the vibe of an old small town in the center of Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania. However, Architectural Bureau G. Natkevicius & Partners made it happen marvelously.
Because the project is sitting on the plot of land next to Bernardine Cemetery, one of Vilnius’s historic sites, the project then must blend well with its surroundings and adhere to heritage restrictions. These requirements have become a big challenge for the designer to get the project done harmonically.
Let’s take a closer look at how the architect managed to fit the building onto the L-shaped plot. Besides simply filling the land shape, the triangular cuts along the side give the building an advanced spatial design. These sharp cuts droop inside the building edge, creating a stunning visual experience for the users inside and leaving some outdoor space for the nooks and small terraces.
As the house owner is one of the most well-known designers in Lithuania, it’s not too unusual that the house’s design shows some meaningful imitation. If we consider the project metaphorically, we can compare the building to a massive piece of wood with some glowing axe marks. It not only glows from the inside after sunset, but in the daytime, these glass walls on the cuts also provide natural light to the interior space.
Even though the project is a single-storey building, the floor inside the master bedroom has been elevated to provide users with an excellent view through the glass wall.
The programs inside consist of a living area and kitchen separated by a specially designed furniture block. Both terraces are also accessible from this area. Next, there is a master bedroom with an elevated floor, as mentioned earlier, which can be accessed by a concrete stairway.
With its warm and cozy atmosphere, this house has become one of the most pleasant residential projects one could imagine owning. And although this wish could not be realistically fulfilled, at least seeing the pictures of it has given us some good daydreaming time.
