Assuming we could travel back in time and observe how people build their habitats, we might find that managing construction details is one of the most challenging tasks for many. In the past, when there were limited sources of decoration ideas, a space dedicated to sets of room mockups was helpful as inspirational sources. Perhaps this could be why most millennials and older generations have a scenario of the solid showroom stamped in their memory, but a Japanese home-building firm known as Sekisui House knows precisely that it’s not the case for the present day.
Home buyers’ behavior has changed due to the new opportunities that came with the advent of the Internet. Having fully transitioned out of the analog era, people may now enjoy surfing in the pool of home decoration references by just scrolling through their smartphones. With this alteration, Sekisui House intended to create a communication lounge instead of an old-fashioned showroom. The lounge would function as a gathering space where the staff can meet their clients; here is where the designer takes charge.
Sekisui House’s demand perfectly matched Nendo‘s unique style. Not only does the word Nendo itself mean ‘clay’ in Japanese, but it also represents the designer’s personality, whose design is both playful and adjustable.
The rectangular coil pattern glass walls invent a lengthy path that circulates the users in only one clear but smooth direction. Judging by the orientation of the passage alone, this communication lounge may look far from complex design, but Nendo has managed to make it surprisingly dynamic. Programs like café, sample gallery, lounge, and mini garden were placed along the trail with blurry edges. No clear-cut separations were seen in this project, neither thick wall nor solid partition.
The design of Sumu Fumu Terrace fulfils Sekisui House’s wish nicely—that is, its visitors can now enjoy coffee in a very comfortable atmosphere while discussing professional matters such as architectural designs or constructions with the field experts.
The transparent material used in the Sumu Fumu Terrace creates a sense of function blending and allows natural light to get through the space pleasantly. The detail of floor and ceiling materials, such as color and synchronized pattern alignment, is another critical factor that contributes to incredible visual effects for the whole project.
Shelves, hangers, hooks, and monitors are attached to rails built into the glass walls. These components are essential features for the display of decoration material samples.
Sumu Fumu Terrace creates a new definition of a showroom for any homeowners to be. With its tangible presentation, one’s perception of how well each material sample in the gallery space might fit into their lifestyle would appear even more realistic.
