The beauty of decay might be something recognizable to only a limited number of people. It requires such high visualized ability and quite a bit of above-standard imagination to address the aesthetic hidden behind a pile of debris. However, once it’s been discovered, a huge addiction may occur to viewers astonishingly.
Dabang Café, consisting of three small buildings, is a recent city attraction in Jeonju, South Korea. Every piece of the renovated construction components contains somebody’s memories from the past.
Decades ago, there was a factory not far from the site. Indeed, once the relocation needs had increased in the neighborhood, many properties for rent popped up. The group of buildings that make up this cafe was also originally one of the accommodations for those factory workers.
Being abandoned caused the building to gradually deteriorate. Roofs, floors, and walls were far from usable before ‘one-aftr,’ the project’s architect, stepped in. The fallen concrete roof tiles were scattered all over; nothing obstructed the interior from the sky. Unwanted greenery also took place everywhere. Without great visionary sight, the building sure would not be able to turn out like what users perceive today.
The largest building among all three was, in the very old days, used by the family who ran the business. It has now become a space for ordering and prep counter, and with its size, service facilities have also been placed here.
In the past, the other two buildings were occupied by units for rent, with an area of 12 square meters for each family. To create various types of space, the designer took down the unit partitions inside the middle building and converted the whole area into one open-air path with mini sunken gardens alongside while preserving the southern building subdivided into units as it used to be.
To connect all three buildings, the elongated pathway has been created and placed on the site’s eastern end. Along this lengthy area, the customers can enjoy their beverages at the little bar seatings as well.
After redefining the whole project, the charm of decay has become more noticeable than ever. The overall appearance of the place consists of white walls with the dull texture of concrete, rusty-like steel meshes jutting out from vertical planes, transparent roof materials with thin curtains, and bare i-beam structures. Unlike average architecture, the actual matter of the construction components at Dabang Café has been shown intentionally, leaving the sense of being degenerate for the users to explore.
We may have reached an era where more and more old concrete buildings need to be renewed. With all the values in its design, Dabang Café can now be considered as a definition of how to breathe new life into spiritless architecture.
