The daily irksome difficulty caused by tropical climate conditions is probably something that we, the South Easterners, might have to accept (without willingness). Surprisingly, not all life forms hate the hot and humid weather like we do. At least there are certain fungi that genuinely love the local dampness and thrive in this type of moisture.
For this reason, the selection of materials for durable items such as tables, cabinets, beds, and many others must be carefully screened for their properties. Jarrod Lim, the designer and owner of a famous furniture brand from Singapore, is also one of those who have proven it through their direct experience.
Jarrod Lim is one of the fifty designers who have been invited to create works for display at the EMERGE showcase under the theme “CRAFT + INDUSTRY: MAN + MACHINE” at the FIND Design Fair Asia. This event, which was held in Singapore at the end of September, has served as a great gathering spot for interior and furniture designers.
At the event, Jarrod shared with his audience about his work of art, the Peacock Chair. He stated, “Originally, I planned to create a solid chair without slats, but it just didn’t look right. It looked extremely top-heavy, and the intersection of the backrest and the base, aesthetically, didn’t work. By adding the slats and working with the grain of the wood, I was able to ensure the lines of the backrest progress down through the seat, right to the base. These small decisions were deliberately made to ensure the aesthetic works”.
The attraction of this art extends beyond its appearance. The material, chosen by Jarrod himself, is equally admirable.
As his furniture is primarily produced for tropical countries—especially our neighbors in ASEAN—Jarrod has chosen thermally modified timber, or TMT, for his creations. The designer has an excellent understanding of the nature of wood, especially those species from America.
TMT is kiln-treated wood. The primary step of the drying process involves heating up to 180-215 degrees Celsius, which can take up to 3 or 4 days to complete. Besides the microstructure-level modifications that reduce the wood’s ability to absorb air moisture, the food sources for harmful fungus species are also removed from these woods to increase durability efficiently. This method works very well on North American hardwoods such as red oak.
By choosing TMT, Jarrod achieved his goal of creating beautiful and durable pieces. He defines his work with the word ‘Sun Lounge.’ The reason is no other than that it’s a piece of fine furniture designed to withstand the sun’s scorching rays and the steaming humidity that Southeast Asian inhabitants must contend with.
