Tighten the Father-and-Son Generation Link
through the "Link House"

Living with the family we grew up with is definitely a part of Eastern culture. Even though we value personal space as much as anyone else in the world does, at the same time, we also want to reside under the same roof as our parents.

Situated in the center of Ahmedabad, India, “Link House” is a residence owned by an entrepreneur who is also a real estate magnate. Designed by Openideas Architects, the task for this project was to construct two distinct houses and an outhouse on a moderately small plot of land, mainly to serve the father and the son.

With the requirement and the limitation of the land area, a creative way of dealing with the spatial design is needed in this case. By leaving an impressive number of areas for green space, the architect separated the house on the ground level into two blocks, one for the father and one for the son, and then reconnected them on the upper level. Sunken courtyards, pocket gardens, and lush lawns marvelously occupied the ground space between these concrete structures.

Without any doubt, this project’s most eye-catching feature is likely to be a bridge that wiggled through the front greenery and mini waterscape in a very dynamic manner. This iconic bridge would lead the users from ground level to the entertainment program, connecting the two blocks on the upper level. Adjacent to this indoor leisure space is a stunning terrace swimming pool where the family gathers. Interestingly, the architect stated, “This link between the two blocks is not just physical but also symbolic. It signifies the bridge link between generations, ideologies, and experiences.”

At the back end of the land, another large patch of lawn is there alongside the stepped pavement, ready to serve any kind of family activity.

It is not only the features that appear above the ground that can stunt us. Lying underneath the house is an unexpected tranquil spa decorated with the wood and finest Italian marble, as well as the feature that allows access to the skylight. The seamless integration of large openings surprisingly unites the indoors with the picturesque outdoors, using natural light as a connector.

Let’s explore the mood and tone of interior design in different parts of the house. Indeed, the prudence and calmness of the parents have been expressed through the gray tones, fitting for their maturity. On the contrary, the son’s area is filled with playful and lively elements, reflecting his youth.

The architect lastly defined the project, “In every aspect, this house showcases a thoughtful design, where luxury meets functionality, surprise greets at every turn and where every day is an experience.”
