Unveiling the Harmonious Rhythm of
Zijing International Conference Camp Hidden in the Valley

Long ago, an area surrounded by mountains in the western part of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi, was filled with various species of plants. A lush and dense forest created a beautiful scene for any observer, even though it gradually faded over time due to the deforestation for agricultural purposes. But today, Zijing International Conference Camp’s recent presence has built a harmonious connection between nature and artificial structures, as Studio Zhu Pei, the project designer, intended.

“Incomplete Integrity,” Studio Zhu Pei’s design philosophy, is clearly expressed throughout the entire project. One might notice and categorize its manifestations into three distinct aspects.

Begin with the aspect of the clustered settlement; since the entire project is placed on an uneven land area in the valley, the planning then has to flow along with the organic contours. Blurring the sharp edges between the natural environment and the artificial structures is vital to creating this architecture of nature.

Come along the vertical dimension as a second key element. Given the project’s mountainous surroundings, leveling the buildings is challenging. Each structure within the project can vary in height, harmonizing with the levels of the mountains around it.

The climate conditions and natural light quality then lastly come. Gray spaces leading to each meeting room become the critical element to create such a natural blended project. The architecture functions effectively during both summer and rainy seasons of Jingdezhen; while providing a covered area when it rains outside, it also casts welcome shadows on sunny days, allowing users to enjoy their time in this place all year round.

Besides all three key elements mentioned above, there is another highlight feature that couldn’t be overlooked. The inverted single-curved arches we’ve seen throughout the project were translated from the traditional Chinese double-eave roof language. These curvy roofs create a pleasant rhythm to the overall look of the camp. Positioned to overlap, the way they control the entry of natural light adds a charming direction to the interior.

As we’ve heard, the ancestors who once lived in the area utilized their wisdom to blend the geological features and climate conditions with their way of living. We believe this unity between people and nature is the most essential factor that inspired the establishment of this glorious place hidden in the valley.
