'Untitled Thonglor' A Bar Behind a Pawn Shop Cover
that Will Sarcastically Make You Question Life

For those of you who know Bangkok very well, the name ‘Thonglor’ will undoubtedly pop up in your mind when someone speaks of the wealthiest zone of this mega city. With its dynamic from office worker lifestyle during the day time and the vibrant atmosphere from the luxury pubs and bars at night, the existence of some pawn shops indeed creates a strange sight for passersby.

Untitled Thonglor is the fifth bar of the famous YOLO GROUP, designed by Godmother Studio, with collaboration on the shopfront artwork from SKETCHEDBUK. The place’s front facade is covered by a bunch of neon signs, enticing people to perceive it as three vintage pawn shops, filling the three units of old shophouses. Considering that pawn shops are typically associated with the working class, the bar’s appearance in this location is quite ironic. Who would have guessed there would be a luxury bar hidden behind this shopfront, giving us the feeling of a meeting place for secret agents in spy movies.

Once inside, the most eye-catching feature couldn’t be anything else but the copper tubes that wiggle through the space, creating a continuous slithering frame for the interior. The architect gave us some details, “As customers enter the main entrance and walk through the small space designed to resemble a pawnshop’s foyer, they will be surprised when they pass through a curtain and enter the main bar space. This space is designed to give the sense of being great and powerful when sitting at the gray 6.5 meters long marble top bar with amber light wrapping the bar in front of a wall of gigantic vertical frames that allow the existing steel beam to pierce through, and we also design a high armchair which a bit bigger than usual for the most comfortable while sitting at the bar.”

Lighting is another juicy highlight for us. With an intelligent lighting system that adjusts the transitions of all these indirect light sources, the place becomes even more attractive for those who wish to spend their time in a dynamic yet intimate atmosphere.

For wealthy newcomers, getting into this mysterious bar may be their first experience walking through a pawn shop entrance, and it might raise some life questions in their minds. “We want to challenge their assumptions and make them think about class differences and inequality,” once again stated the architect.
