The cruelty that world citizens had to face, almost no matter where they were, has surely left some wounds in people’s hearts. China is one of the lands that had been trampled by their invaders. As in Xiajiaqiao Town of Kunshan, the counter-Japanese armed force had also once been formed by Tao Yiqiu, the wealthy landlord at the time. Not only did he establish the armed force, but he also dedicated his own land for the purpose of resistance.
With his intrepidity, the community built Tao Yiqiu, a memorial hall to honor his devoted soul in Lujia Town. Unfortunately, due to the underground line construction plan in 2020, his memorial hall needed to be relocated. The new hall finally placed Tao Yiqiu’s birthplace, Xiaqiao Community. The only requirement from the client is that the building area does not exceed 1000 square meters and can accommodate a few small exhibits, as well as two sets of sculptures from the current venue.
Even though the request is simple, the shape of the land plot still causes some difficulty for Atelier Deshaus, the project architect. The narrow and lengthy shape of the land, plus the fact that it is surrounded by an untidy environment, creates a need for well-managed design that is even higher than usual.
The architecture features two sets of walls of varying heights, creating a moderate separation from the surrounding environment. As it is a memorial hall, the tranquility is of course the major key. The S-shape reciprocation of the path creates a perfect flow inside such a limited area. This design allows visitors to perceive each of the five themed exhibition spaces from different points, offering a visually diverse experience to explore.
“The design utilizes the depth of the site to emphasize the horizontality and establish the overall visual tranquility of the memorial hall. It also relies on the establishment and elimination of the frontage and symmetry of the building, the highlighting of the sense of volume and the elimination of the sense of heaviness, the amplification and compression of the architectural scale, and the tension between the centripetality and discreteness of the themed space, to demonstrate how the memorial hall implies flow and slight changes in its basic formality, and contains lightness and transparency in its moderate sublimity,” stated by Atelier Deshaus.
Taoyiqiu Memorial is definitely the place for peacefulness. The thoughtful architecture does not only allow the new generation to appreciate the sacrifice of Tao Yiqiu, but also giving them the tranquility in their mind once they are inside this memorial hall.
