Soho House Bangkok is situated in the bustling Sukhumvit neighborhood within a colonial-style building that began life as a boutique hotel. The Soho House Design team has completely transformed the building’s interior while preserving its original structure and distinctive exterior. The club features interiors inspired by local crafts, reflecting Thailand’s rich culture. We find it appealing how the design team achieved a delicate balance between a sense of serenity from the essence of the existing architecture with a playful palette of color and materials that beautifully capture the city’s dynamic spirit.

The design of Soho House Bangkok carefully blends indoor and outdoor spaces, making the most of the climate and embracing the local social life. The outdoor checkered pool area stands as the central feature of the House. The outdoor terrace cultivates an inviting ambience, enhanced by the invigorating sunlight and fresh air. Surrounded by lush tropical foliage, it is a space that invites connection and relaxation, with multiple types of comfortable seating arranged to create intimate and private zones where guests can enjoy breezy shared moments.

A layered interplay of different materials with handcrafted touches is at the heart of the Soho House Bangkok interior. The design team successfully created a homely, lived-in feel through the thoughtful selection and arrangement of furnishings, making the space feel cozy yet refined. The House maintains a very residential scale, and the design strengthens the intimate atmosphere of the original building. The intimate scale of the House allowed for a creative way of using the space, highlighted by the commissioning of a site-specific artwork integrated into the atrium’s vaulted ceiling. The art collection, featuring works by artists born or based in Thailand, enriches the interior and reflects the diversity of the contemporary art scene in Bangkok and across Thailand.

In a delightful conversation with Sophie Baker, Senior Designer at Soho House Design, we gained insight into the interiors of the House. Sophie led Soho House Bangkok’s design and has worked on impressive projects like Soho Works, Brighton Beach House, The Ned Doha, and Soho Mews House. She took us through her design journey and shared how elements were brought together to shape the overall vision.

Dsign Something: How does the design of Soho House Bangkok mix Thai culture with the brand’s global style to create a unique experience?

Sophie Baker: “We wanted to celebrate all the crafts of Thailand. We spent a lot of time in the city and around Thailand—really getting to know the culture and understanding the local craft, the people, and the local scene. We visited fabric houses and connected with artisans who specialize in making silk. We had an amazing local contractor who introduced us to lots of local artisans skilled in woodwork and other traditional crafts. We really did our due diligence, researching all these things and trying to bring them into the House. We wanted to make the House feel like it had been there forever, and it was part of the local culture rather than just a new hotel that had been placed within it. Everything we made architecturally in the house was locally made. It was a real collaboration of the craft of all the people we could possibly find in Thailand and our design.”

Dsign Something: How does interior design help make all Soho House locations feel connected, and what makes Bangkok’s design special?

Sophie Baker: “All of our houses are quite different in terms of their design because each one is relative to the culture that it sits in. For example, in the Barcelona House, the beautiful local Spanish tiles and materials indicate you’re in Spain. You have everything you need to understand the country and its culture through local materials. One thing that’s quite nice about our brand is that even though each House is quite different depending on its location, there’s still a consistent thread in the design style that ties them all together. It’s eclectic, layered, and domestic in style, making it feel like you’re in someone’s home rather than a hotel, and our members feel like they have their home away from home wherever they are in the world.”

“With Bangkok, what made it so different is the scale of the building—it was originally an old boutique hotel, but we aimed to restore it to its original form as a villa. What we try to do is open it up and have a real domestic floor plan, featuring an entrance vestibule that leads to the other areas of the building, reminiscent of traditional colonial villas. So the flow of the building feels very domestic, making it feel quite charming. Also, it’s located in quite a busy part of Bangkok. However, once you go into the garden, it transforms into a little oasis within the city. You’ve got this and all these palm trees over the pool, which is kind of a shaded dappled view, so it’s quite charming, and it’s quite relaxing because even though you’re in the middle of the city, and I think that makes it feel quite different to a lot of our other houses.”

Dsign Something: One significant aspect of Soho House is the adaptive reuse of historic buildings. Can you elaborate on how the original building has guided your design decisions?

Sophie Baker: “What we wanted to do was keep the essence of what the hotel before had in its form but also change it into a more open space. We opened up all the facades of the ground floor to open out onto the pool, so it really celebrated that view. Whenever you walked into any part of the house, you had a view through to the garden, and so it really connected the indoors and outdoors. It did have so much charm architecturally; we just made sure we kept the facade and everything exactly as it was, so we just brought it back to life a little bit with new shutters and new doors. But all of it was sensitive to the original architecture—we didn’t try and stray away from the original style.”

Dsign Something: What are the special design features of Soho House Bangkok? And how does Soho House Bangkok’s design use local materials and craftsmanship to highlight the uniqueness of Thai culture?

Sophie Baker: “So many local craftspeople in Bangkok, we were able to achieve, for example, the parquet floors. We made this two-tone wood floor in this nice modern pattern, and that was inspired by an old fabric; we had someone locally hand-cut every piece of the wood and lay it by hand. It was this really beautiful thing that turned out really stunning, and it’s such a feature of the House. You can see that it’s got a lot of soul to it, and you can tell it. Obviously, in Bangkok and Thailand, the silk craft is really celebrated, so we wanted to use as much local silk as possible. We literally covered all the walls in silk, in most of the ground floor, in different patterns. We use local suppliers like Jim Thompson, and we also use custom fabrics by local people. You’ve got this kind of monochrome botanical pattern on silk just covering all the walls, which is a real celebration of the silk industry in Thailand.”

“Also, a lot of our furniture was made locally, which was super nice. We got to meet lots of local makers, and we spent a lot of time in the markets of Bangkok finding vintage pieces. So all of those details—we were able to hone in on the craft in this project because there’s such a wealth of craftspeople in Bangkok and Thailand.”

Dsign Something: How does the design of Soho House make it easier for members to meet and work together?
