World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2023
Prospective opportunities for all designers on the global stage

It is an excellent opportunity to attend WAF 2023, or the World Architecture Festival, an event founded in the conviction that architecture can help people live better lives and to celebrate those who develop architectural works. It is launching its 2023 edition at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, from November 29 to December 1, 2023.

What exactly is WAF?

WAF, or World Architecture Festival, is a networking platform for over 2,000 notable architects and designers from 70 nations across the world to meet new people, exchange information, find inspiration, and create a worldwide reputation. Alternatively, you may relate to the Oscar ceremony for architects and designers from throughout the world. WAF 2023, or the World Architecture Festival, takes place this year in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore in collaboration with GROHE, one of LIXIL's power brands that has been a Founder Partner of WAF events for the previous 16 years.

Various intriguing activities of the 2023 World Architecture Festival (WAF)

WAF activities lasted three full days (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday). This year, it is held in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from November 29 to December 1, 2023, with many various events for participants to partake in and pick from, including;

Live Awards Judging

Listen to project presentations from the shortlisted based on the sort of work in the competition. Each individual has 10 minutes to present their work and an additional 8 minutes for questions and answers. It is considered to be an ideal opportunity to impart information and inspiration to the audience.

Keynotes and Talks 

Gain knowledge from a discussion on architectural projects, which are held throughout the entire 3 days.

The Festival Hall 

Visit the Festive Hall to see the WAF exhibition and network with other participants.

Architecture Tours 

Take a tour of Singapore’s most inspirational buildings.

Gala Awards Dinner 

Celebrate the WAF at The Awards Gala Dinner, which is held on Friday 1st of December.

Let’s get to know five most promising designers at WAF World Architecture Festival

At the World Architecture Festival (WAF), there are 76 international speakers and presenters providing presentations on many intriguing topics in the Keynotes and Talks activity, of which we would like to introduce five designers with compelling topics as follows;

 

Andrew CHEN

Andrew Chen, Design Director from Cendes Design

Andrew Chen holds a dual bachelor’s degree in engineering and architecture from the state of Texas in the United States. Before joining Cendes, he worked at American architecture firms RTKL Associates and Design International. He has gained innovative experience from supervising building projects around the world, providing him knowledge and a deep understanding of global diversity in economic and cultural aspects. He excels at incorporating cultural characteristics from various regions into his designs, effectively reflecting the needs of different cultural backgrounds and societal strata.

 Additionally, Andrew Chen presents at the 2023 World Architecture Festival (WAF) on the topic of Sustainable Urban future: 2023 RIBA China Landmark 100 – Urban Complex. Sustainable Urban Future 2023 aims to explore the personalities of China’s contemporary urban commercial complexes through a series of activities to discover Chinese urban landmarks and to promote the value of these architectural works, providing different perspectives to different audiences around the world at WAF 2023.

Johanna is an architect and co-founder of 5468796 Architecture Inc. The firm has been awarded numerous international recognitions for their work, especially in the area of housing. In addition, Johanna Hurme is an activist, advocate, initiator, and co-creator of many design-related programs, and continues to serve on several national and international committees. She also contributed to Innovative Solutions for Creating Sustainable Cities.

Johanna Hurme is a speaker of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) being held in 2023 with the topic: Platform: Middle Architecture for Housing the 99% which she discusses solutions for socially and economically sustainable cities and more equitable and livable housing, using a concept masterplan to present strategic solutions for designing high quality attainable, accessible, and affordable housing for everyone at WAF 2023

Honor Harger

Honor Harger, Vice President, ArtScience Museum Singapore / Attractions at Marina Bay Sands 

Honor Harger is a curator from New Zealand with an interest in the cultural impact of scientific ideas. She is Vice-President of ArtScience Museum Singapore, and Vice President of Attractions at Marina Bay Sands. In 2022, she was one of the members of the Future of Arts and Culture study organizing committee, which will create possible momentum as the culture changes in the coming decade.

Honor Harger is also a speaker of the (WAF) World Architecture Festival being held in 2023 with the topic: Sculpting Space. Honor Harger’s session reflects on how the architecture of the museum impacts the work of curators, referring to a number of site-specific projects inside and outside the ArtScience Museum Singapore.

Antoine Besseyre des Horts, LIXIL Global Design Leader, Asia

Antoine Besseyre des Horts is the Leader, LIXIL Global Design, Asia. He leads an international team providing creative direction that shape LIXIL brands’ -such as Grohe, American Standard and INAX- strategies. He has won numerous design awards such as Red Dot, IF, Good Design, Design For Asia, and A&D Trophy Awards. In 2011, as part of the Grohe Design team, he won the prestigious Red Dot Design Team of the Year Award.

Antoine Besseyre des Horts also speaks at the (WAF) World Architecture Festival in 2023 on the topic: Water and The Water Prize Discussion which includes a panel discussion on water with our esteemed WAFX Winner – Water and Water Prize judges. 

Mehmet Kalyoncu 

Chairman and Founder 
Türkiye Design Council 

Mehmet Kalyoncu, Chairman and Founder of the Türkiye Design Council

Mehmet Kalyoncu is an architect, civil society activist, and businessman. He was also the first Turkish student accepted into Oxford University’s St Hugh’s College academic program, where he studied Renaissance Architecture. He studied Architecture at Istanbul Technical University, and joined executive programs at Harvard, Tufts and Babson.

Mehmet Kalyoncu also speaks at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in 2023 on the topic: How to revive a post – disaster city: A new model for international Collaboration which cover the sustainability of architecture, design, engineering, culture, heritage, and archaeology to bring their expertise, to the reimagining of one of the world’s most ancient places. Mehmet Kalyoncu’s aims to share its experience by forming a new international model for collaboration that can be transferable to support other cities that need design and planning support after disasters.
